QUOKKA- THE HAPPIEST ANIMAL IN THE WORLD!

Quokkas- a tiny teddy-bear sized marsupial was not heard of until a couple of years ago.

The word ‘QUOKKA’ doesn’t even translate to most languages yet the quokka is known for being ‘the World’s happiest animal’.

In 2019 Chris Hemsworth posted a ‘quokka selfie’ on his Instagram page and the photo went viral.

Ever since #quokkaselfie has become a must-do when visiting Western Australia. It has attracted many tourists including celebrities like Roger Federer, Kylie Minogue, Margot Robbie and Rafael Nadal.

So, who are quokkas and where do they inhabit?

Quokkas are macropods unique to Western Australia. Their World population counts a herd of only 14 000 and only in Southwestern Australia. These cute animals struggle to survive on the mainland where they have to contend with predators. Thus, the majority of quokkas – 12 000- live on Rottnest Island, 18km off coast of Western Australia.

Quokkas are known as the “happiest animal in the world” due to their cute, friendly and charismatic appearance and their irresistible smiles.
